Chapter 22

Arielle sat in her car outside of CreditConnect, nose buried in the newest Stephen King novel, The Tommyknockers. She fell into a routine rather quickly, thanks to a firm grasp of Mason’s schedule. If he entered the building with his lunch pail in hand, he didn’t step foot outside until his shift was over. It was boring, but it made her job simple until they made progress on other fronts.

This morning, she watched him enter with said lunch pail, and promptly reclined her seat to lie back and enjoy the alien horror novel. She left herself at an angle just high enough to see the entrance over the car’s dashboard. Anytime the doors swung open, the movement would catch her attention, just in case.

It was 11:30 when her stomach rumbled, the turkey and ham sandwich she had brought weighing on her mind. She adjusted her seat to its upright position and reached into the backseat to grab her brown-bag lunch.

A car blazed into the parking lot; the tires making the faintest of screeches as it turned the corner into the row behind Arielle. It sped down the row, going at least thirty miles per hour, and this prompted Arielle to subconsciously reach under her seat where she kept her loaded pistol. Her fingers brushed the cool steel as she lost sight of the vehicle in the jungle of parked cars.

She debated stepping out for a better view, but decided it was too risky. One rule she followed was to never assume an action was meaningless. Sure, the speeding car was likely someone running late for their shift, but there was always the chance it had something to do with Mason Gregory.

Arielle rolled down her window to better hear outside.

Silence.

She figured the car had found a parking space, and shifted her focus to the office building’s entrance, assuming whoever had parked would enter within seconds.

No one ever appeared, and when she heard the steady rhythm of footsteps approach from behind, she whipped out her pistol and raised it in front of her face. She glanced over her shoulder and saw the movement of someone walking down the row behind her car, and remained frozen in her seat, hoping the person would pass.

Instead, they turned into the space where Arielle had parked, prompting her to shove open the door and jump out, gun cocked and ready to blast. “Stop right there!” she shouted.

“What the fuck?!” Selena screamed, jumping back. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Selena? What are you doing?” Arielle lowered her gun and looked around to make sure no one had spotted their encounter. The coast was clear. “Get in the car. Now!”

Selena rolled her eyes and shuffled around Arielle’s car, falling into the passenger seat and slamming the door.

“Seriously,” Arielle said. “Why are you here?”

“Well, in case you’ve forgotten, we don’t have any cell phones and I need to talk to you. Something major has happened.” Selena stared out the windshield, head bobbing from side to side while she spoke.
